I've been in and out of eve for the last twelve years.
My first character was a caldari railgunner back in '04. My first taste of PvP was getting my moa damn near instapopped by a nanophoon back when modules didn't have stacking penalties and the split weapon system was less a drawback as energy vampires worked regardless of cap levels, so it orbited me at something like 5km/sec chucking torps.
This toon was born just a little over ten years ago.
Four months into eve on this character, I fitted a harbinger and headed to deep stain to see how long I could remain undocked, ratting. On my way out of Providence I hit my first gate camp in 0.0, two rifters, an enyo, a taranis, a stiletto, a crow, and a flycatcher. The flycatcher had already launched its sphere. I started my burn toward a celestial, and started locking everything on grid, set my NOS, web, and guns to fire on the fist thing I locked, figuring it would be a MWDing frigate at low transversal. The stiletto hit my web and took 2-3 volleys and exploded. Between running two medium energy vamps and a web I was able to cap out and destroy the rifters and the flycatcher, the enyo and crow realized I didn't have a point and warped off. My hands were shaking, but I survived what I considered to be my first real PvP encounter in eve, and even got "holy s.... gf" in local.
I slowly worked my way into Stain, always warping to celestials from gates, building up bookmarks of "safe" spots that weren't in between any two objects, creating warp to zero bookmarks for all the stargates. Back then there wasn't any PC sov in Stain, so I managed to stay out there undocked for six months, dodging gangs, ratting and building up a bankroll. My voyage was finally ended by a gang consisting of two vagabonds and a huginn. I let them pod me since I didn't have any implants and it seemed the quickest way back to highsec.
My Stain expidition netted me enough profit to replace my harbinger, and buy a 'geddon as well. I also wanted to start doing more gang work, so I bought 20 malediction hulls for the amazing price of 40 million isk, and started training to fly inties, with the goal of flying a vagabond.
I spent most of my time running missions to gain standing with every l3 and l4 locator agent I possibly could (as like other, non-miner pilots, I entertained fantasies of becoming a feared bounty hunter). About this time, I saw an ad from a pilot named Alekseyev Karrde, looking for pilots for a mercenary corporation called Noir. that he had just formed. I thought it sounded like fun, so I messaged him about joining and was accepted. Before I headed out to where they were based I ran every active war target through my locator agents, and took a malediction out on a recon patrol. I got lucky and came across a war target in an atron that was set up for fast travel. I had a sebo and a 24 km point, caught him on gate decloak, popped his frigate and got his pod as well. At the time, loot rules meant the cargo was mine, and that is how I got my first gistii afterburners and MWDs. I installed one of the MWDs in one of my maledictions, has kept the 2 mil hull alive almost ten years. I think I was member #5, but it seemed like the typical gang consisted of my malediction and Aleks' nemesis. Noir. joined with Trinity Nova to take on larger contracts.
I took a break while a new girlfriend kept me busy, but news that BoB was disbanded piqued my curiosity, so I re-subbed, loaded some mobile warp disruptors and a cargo hold full of ammo into my vagabond, and headed down to Providence, set up catch bubbles in 2-3 gate systems, and attacked as many fleeing industrials that I safely could. I started talking with the guys from Noir. again, and found out they were on contract in Providence and Domain, intercepting shipping fleeing the turmoil, basically freebooting same as me. I re-joined Noir. At the time, a lot of freighter pilots would logoff when threatened. One of our covops pilots had the great idea of scanning out the freighter during the window it was still in space, and tagging it with a smart bomb to put the 15 min aggression timer on it. After a bit of tracking, we found ourselves a logoffski freighter, our covops pilot did his job and tagged the freighter, than gang warped us in to destroy it. The pilot was surprised to find himself in a pod rather than a freighter when he logged back in, and proceeded to offer to buy back the fully researched POS module blueprints that were in his wreck. Our FC said he could bid against everyone else in Jita if he really wanted it. It isn't huge, but I feel accomplished for being on what was the first logoffski freighter kill.
When I realized my character was turning ten, I re-subbed to see what has being going on. Right now I'm trying to figure out if I want to join a nullsec or w-space alliance. Maybe Ill try out the SoE arc while I'm deciding, since this thread is the first time I've ever heard about it. |
